The Little River Watershed Association (LRWA) would like to announce the launch of our Business Friends of the Little River Program.
The “Business Friends” program is the sister-program of our Friends of the Little River Program that we launched in May of 2021. Our goal is to build support and community among regional businesses interested in supporting the LRWA and our work in the Little River watershed.
First, let us tell you a little bit about ourselves: The Little River Watershed Association (LRWA) was founded in 1998 by a group of people that were passionate about the advocacy and protection of the Little River in East Tennessee. Our mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance the Little River and its tributaries by mobilizing public support, building public awareness, performing project-based activities and recommending best management practices based on a scientifically informed perspective. In short, our association strives to be the “voice of the little river”.
Over the past year, the LRWA has accomplished a lot:
We partnered with Ijams Nature Center to be a part of their annual River Rescue event and removed 2,734 pounds of trash from Pistol Creek.
Removed 3,545 pounds of trash from the watershed during other cleanups throughout the year.
Received a Cigarette Litter Prevention grant from Keep America Beautiful and placed seven cigarette bins at different areas in the community to help reduce cigarette litter from entering into the watershed
With the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, we removed 5,500 cigarette butts from the watershed that were sent in and recycled as part of the grant partnership with Terracycle.
We held our annual Stream School events, where we were able to partner again with the Ft. Craig Boys and Girls Club to get grade school children out to the Little River to learn about the importance of protecting the watershed as a whole, and where kids also get to experience the wonders that lie just beneath the water’s surface by snorkeling in the shallows of the river with the help of our program partners, Conservation Fisheries Inc.
Partnered with Keep Blount Beautiful once again to host our 3rd Annual Little River Run 5K, where we had 190 participants join for a run by the Little River in Towsend!
Your support of the LRWA will help us continue our good work in the watershed. In the coming year we plan to continue hosting river clean-ups, stream school, and other educational programs. We are also planning other projects aimed at improving water quality and river access within the watershed. Your contribution makes all of these programs possible and we could not do it with you!
We hope that you will consider becoming a Business Friend of the Little River and join other community supporters who recognize the benefit of having a local watershed organization working to protect a valuable economic and natural resource. Sponsorships are a great way to advertise, and the LRWA is committed to ensuring that the community is aware of your valuable support.
